  • Welcome! Have fun and make sure to show off some of your collection.
  • I began collecting movie poster art in the 1970s after seeing the one sheet for Dial M for Murder in the window (not the Rear Window) of Bob Coleman's Hollywood Poster Exchange. Luckily I decided to specialize in someone with a long career who attracted so many famous actors and actresses to appear in his movies: Alfred Hitchcock. By the time I liquidated 95+% of my collection at a series of auctions I had over 180 posters and over 600 lobby cards, all Hitch.  What made me a bit different is that I really enjoyed the art of non-USA Hitch promotional art.  Almost no one was collecting Belgian, Argentinian, etc. posters in those days (although the French were fierce collectors of French Hitch posters.) While I liked Hitch, what attracted me was the promotional art more than Hitch as director. I kept about ten Hitch posters, mostly because I forgot I had some frames under the bed in the guest room. I am slowly dipping my toe in the water, but on a budget. Anything I may post on this site is either currently owned by me or was owned previously owned by me.
  • Welcome!
  • Hey there, thanks for the invite. Been collecting for over 40 years and despite an early 90’s purge, I’m back up to about 400 posters. Mainly a 70s-80s horror/exploitation geek. My goal, like many here, is to get the low down on linen backing and preservation, but also to interact with like minded cinema ephemera folk. Cheers.
  • Hi All!

Thanks for having me here. I collect posters for the films that really mean something to me. Most are from the 70's and 80's, but my collection is limited by my wall space.

My one holy grail is an original UK One Sheet for "The Third Man". The one with the London Pictures logo. I have been searching for it for years, with no luck. If anyone sees this and has a lead for me, I would so appreciate it!

Thanks in advance and looking forward to poking around here.
  • Welcome!  That poster would be a tough one - hope you find it.
  • I know! I was outbid. Heartbroken!
  • Hey All, this is Dave near Philadelphia.  I’m new to the movie poster arena and am pleased to have found this forum.
I have been buying things at auction and selling on eBay for about 2 years.  Seemed like a good idea when I started, although it’s kind of taken over my house and my life!
In any case, along the way I’ve picked up several movie posters - Gaslight was my first; Tomb of Ligeia; Monster on the Campus - French & German version; Tea & Sympathy; Brazil; Bus Stop (French = “Arrete d’Autobus” may be amusing - yet Marilyn remains striking); Lost in Alaska (Abbott & Costello); etc. And a slew a lobby cards.  And some photo plays.  In other words, a hodgepodge! Partly driven by nostalgia, some by a vague sense of investment.  Mostly having fun.

I look forward to the communication and sharing here.  I’m always curious to learn more!
  • Welcome!
  • Welcome! That actually sounds fairly modest for the “little treasures” you have at home. :-)
  • Hi there! Mikel from Seattle here, happy to be a new member of the community. I've been selling vinyl records on the 'net for decades, but will soon be venturing into NSS posters as well and want to soak up as much info as I can before starting that venture. I've always been an NSS collector myself, so getting a wealth of knowledge around this is very exciting.

    A bit about me:

Worked in Industrial Sales (factory automation/electrical wholesale) for 35 years, but have been a collector for much longer, and started selling vinyl records on the internet in 1980, using Netscape Navigator Gold to build my first (text based) website. Continued to buy and sell (mostly buy!) for a few decades, amassing an inventory of about 60,000 vinyl records (only 30k of them online at this point). Then COVID happened. I continued to work my day job (mostly from home) but because the kids couldn't get out to record stores, my online sales BOOMED. I mean... BOOMED! In the course of a few months, I was able to pay off my mortgage. Told my boss I'd mentor & train others for a year, but then I was "retiring" at 60 to build out mightyvinyl.com, travel, and buy more stuff!

Posters (NSS only of course!) have been an enduring obsession. I worked in a video store in college, and called an NSS office (probably in California) in 1983 and set up an account. They were very clear that I had to have a video store or theater in order to purchase. I only made one purchase (I was living a poor starving student life at that point) but it was a good one:
40x60 Star Wars reissue R820106 with the "Revenge Of The Jedi" banner in the lower corner
    40x60 Videodrom 830004
    40x60 Road Warrior 820083
40x60 Tootsie (no idea now why but it seemed like a good idea at the time)
lobby card sets for Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Star Wars.

Anyway, I think it was a pretty good investment, and most are framed around the house with the exception of Tootsie (and the lobby cards).

Long story short: last year I met a wonderful old fella up here in the PNW who has a movie theater in his house with both 35mm and 70mm projection, and Altec Lansing sound system, and hundreds of original prints. He showed me a cancelled check from Quentin Tarrentino from a purchase QT made of 2 or 3 prints. He had tons of folded posters, lobby cards, press books, etc. I ended up buying most of what he had for sale and will eventually be trying to restore/linen back some of my favorites, and selling the majority via eBay.

So.... that's probably WAY MORE than you really wanted to know, but there ya' go!

Here's a few of my faves, as well as my most prized poster - a 40x60 UK Subway poster for Kate Bush The Dreaming. Never seen another!

  • Welcome Mike and thank you for sharing some of your history.
