What Happened To The Australian Daybills?

  • That reissue daybill is likely better than the original, given the average art of Warner daybills I've seen from the late 30's.
  • Murder Is My Beat Daybill (not mine)

  • An excellent looking Murder Is My Beat ( 1955 ) Richardson Studio designed poster, A big thank you to Ves for sharing the image here.

Murder Is My Beat, although being released in the U.S.A, in 1955 this film was only released in Sydney on April 8, 1960. The reason for the delayed Australian release was due to the time period that Allied Artists took switching their Australian distributor from United Artists to Paramount  in the late 1950's. RKO Radio were originally in place to distribute the AA product, but they ceased distribution thus not allowing for this to take place.

By the time Paramount Australia were organised to release AA product there was a big backlog of their product to release, along with their own Paramount product. This unwanted situation resulted in there being too much overall product, and not enough cinemas to release their films in.

Murder Is My Beat, would have been one of the last daybills from Richardson Studio that were distributed in the marketplace in the early to mid 1960's.

Another daybill image found. Slowing chipping away in the quest to locate missing daybill images. One never knows what titles may turn up next.
  • Not sure if this is on the missing list, but I couldn't find another image. Watched the film on Tubi. B crime - 6/10.
    Interesting variation on the rating.

  • I have never sighted this I Mobster daybill previously. Thanks for including if here.

I will have some information on the Strictly For Adults Only rating, along with the For General Exhibition Not Suitable For Children Under 12, and the For General Exhibition Not Suitable For Children Under 14 ratings in the near future.

The information mentioned above will in due course be included in the ''All Things Film  Censorship Related'' thread.
  • Shake Hands With the Devil rare daybill that was on the missing list

  • Thank you John for the image.

The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery ( 1959 ) U.S.A. insert. The film stars Steve McQueen just prior to finding fame in The Magnificent Seven ( 1960 ). Should be a desirable daybill somewhere out there hopefully to surface soon.

Hi Lawrence, here's a pic of Great St Louis Bank Robbery

Hi Sven, the daybill image you had posted has since disappeared. Do you per chance still have the image? Hopefully you do and it can be reinstated here again.
  • I think i have it on usb stick so will have a look
  • The name of this thread is What Happened To The Australian dayills? Well I can report that many hundreds of missing daybills do reside at the National Film And Sound Archive (NFSA).

I recently searched out their website for their daybill holdings Unfortunately the vast majority of the posters that they hold do not display any images on the website.

The most interesting thing regarding the titles that they hold in their collection is the large number of rare silent film daybill posters from the 1920's that we may never have the opportunity to view the images of, which is a shame for them not being availabe for all to see.
  • Surely there must be a way to get in via appointment to view them?  Anyone done it before?  I thought someone mentioned that they had for another reason?

After speaking to various people at NFSA I will highlight what one employee told me. In his own words he said''we are not a library but an archive'. You can submit an online website access form to view certain titles, but it states non media personal requests will not be replied to.

I was also informed that not all of their holding are held in Canberra, but are also held at various sites elsewhere,
  • Shame.  I was thinking of donating some of the rarer titles from my aussie cinema collection, but what's the point if they never get seen.

Great thought to donate some rare Australian posters to them. You could say to the NFSA that you will only donate provided you receive a guarantee from them that the posters will be photographed and the images will be made available to view on their website.
